Q. Is the offset angle and VTA (vertical tracking angle) the same thing?
Answer:
Please be aware that these are two different parameters. The offset
angle of the arm is the angle between the straight line joining the arm
pivot and the stylus tip and that parallel with the sides of the
headshell or mounting point on the arm (this is why some arms are S
shaped and others have the cartridge mounting points at an angle to the
straight arm). In combination with stylus overhang, it helps reduce
lateral tracking error and usually is set at around 23 degrees. This
will be the same for any cartridge used with this particular arm as it
is not a parameter of the cartridge, but the arm itself.
To set the offset angle correctly it is necessary just to make sure that
the cartridge is mounted in the headshell straight and parallel with
the headshell sides, as the angle has been taken care of by the arm
manufacturer.
The VTA on the other hand is the
angle between the record and the cantilever which is particular to each
cartridge design, but is also around 23 degrees.
To set VTA, it is usually only necessary to adjust the arm height so that the arm is parallel to the surface of the record.

Q. What is the importance of the VTA (vertical tracking angle)?
Answer: Although the record player stylus’ job is to faithfully trace the record groove, this is made more difficult because it is not the same size or shape as the cutting stylus which originally made the groove in the first place. Partly, this is ...
Q. Do you supply stylus protractors with Goldring cartridges?
Answer: We do not supply stylus protractors, as this is something which is used to correctly set the overhang and offset according to the turntable manufacturers recommendation (and this is something which we do not have any control over). You can ...
Q. Which Goldring cartridge can I use with my DJ record deck with a straight tonearm?
Answer: In order for any cartridge to track a record properly, without causing distorted sound or damage using a tonearm with a single pivot point (most turntables have this unless they are linear tracking), the arm must have two things; overhang and ...
Q. Which Goldring cartridge is suitable for my Rega tonearm?
Answer: Rega tonearms do not have a facility to easily adjust VTA (vertical tracking angle). The 2000 series has a height from diamond tip to mounting point of 18.5mm which is within the typical range for most cartridges, however we believe that this ...
Q. Why is my cartridge skating out?
Answer: The natural tendency for the stylus and therefore the arm to be deflected towards the centre of the record seems counter intuitive, but it is caused by the off-set angle of the headshell. This offset angle, combined with the correct amount of ...
