Q. Why is the 1042 stylus at an angle to the playing surface?

Answer:

Below is a picture of a conventional cantilever and stylus arrangement. The cantilever has a foot angle of 24 degrees to match the VTA and the diamond sits upright with the central  playing edge at 90 degrees to the groove. This is the type found on all our cartridges except the 1042 and Elite.

Below is a picture of the 1042. This is different from most conventional styli because the diamond is cut so that the playing edge is formed by a 24 degree back cut in the diamond to mimic the shape of the cutting head with which the record was made. It is this edge which plays the groove and therefore it is not necessary to provide a foot angle o the cantilever. This is why to the naked eye the diamond looks to be canted forwards at an alarming angle. Do not worry it is meant to look like this ;-)
