Q. What is the difference between static and dynamic compliance?

Answer:

As an example, the 1000 series features a rubber damper suspension combined with a tie wire. The rubber damper gives it a quite high static compliance of 24 mm/N in the horizontal plane, and the tie wire gives it a lower static compliance of 16 mm/N in the vertical plane – the former helps give it outstanding trackability, and the latter aids with ride height. The figure given on our website for static compliance is an average of these two readings. The static compliance however will not help you to decide whether a cartridge is suitable for a particular mass of tone arm. For this, you need to know the dynamic compliance, which in this instance is 10 Hz. This figure is given on our website and it is between 10-12 mm/N. This means that the cartridge is suitable for tone arms with effective mass between 7 g and 30g.
